Psalm 62:8 WORDart

Hello!  I hope your week is going well and you are crossing things off your to do list.  Mine is growing as it gets crossed off, but I guess that is the way of life.  I would be so bored if I didn’t have a million different things going on, wouldn’t you?

It is no secret that King David had many enemies.  Many stories revolving around him include battle after battle as he claimed what His God had promised to his people.  Of course, this did not make him popular, at least among those who did not associate or worship the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  The book of Psalms, which is mostly written by David, often speaks of his enemies, the fear they caused within him, the weariness of fighting continually against them, the hope that they would be defeated and the requests and sometimes pleas to the One who promised to aid him.  It is the vulnerability and honesty of a man, especially one with as much power and authority as David, who admits what many others would dare not and the sincerity in his prayers and praise to his King that have spoken to many Christians and non-Christians alike.  Many of us can relate to the doubts, the fears, the worries, the weariness in serving God, doing His will and standing for what is good and righteous; especially since it is no longer popular to do so.  David’s experience with these emotional struggles also gave him many personal victories as again and again he turned his concerns over to the Lord and let the Lord fight his battles.  In Psalm 62:8, the Psalmist takes the time to encourage the people of God by saying “Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.”  The definition of refuge is a place of protection or shelter against danger and trouble.  In this day and age, in standing for what is right and fighting against our spiritual enemy, we can sometimes feel as though we are losing ground.  Each day society pushes upon generations to justify sin and to become “accepting” of it.  The thought of speaking up and standing out can often cause us to feel weary and wary as we know it will be a battle to do so.  Many times we hold tight to these feelings not wanting to admit them to others, or to God, for fear of disappointment or judgment, but we can trust that regardless of what is in our heart, our God still longs to hear it.  We can trust that He does not want to hear just the good, but also the bad and the ugly. And despite how ugly our anger, hurt or doubts are, we can trust that He will continue to be a refuge for us.  Against all the hurt and pain, He is our shelter, our protection, our safe place.
